Jim
Gavin, professor of applied human sciences at
Concordia University, has been involved in the
practice of counseling and health promotion
over the past 35 years. He is the author of
8 books and over 150 professional articles,
including the landmark new book, “Lifestyle
Fitness Coaching” (Human Kinetics 2005). Dr
Gavin has been training life coaches and lifestyle
fitness coaches since 1998.
Lifestyle
Fitness Coaching gives fitness professionals
the tools they need to effectively deal with
client resistance, barriers and motivation and
uniquely positions physical activity as a means
to achieve life goals. LFC helps fitness professionals
easily bridge the gap from trainer to coach
by providing practical tools, such as LFC’s
proprietary MAPS inventory, which can be implemented
immediately to achieve client results.

your clients?
3. Change Processes
a.) Change is not an event, it is a process.
4. Phases of Coaching
a.) Explore the phases of the coaching relationship.
5. Discovery and Dialogue Skills
a.) Building a skill base for coaching is a
lifelong endeavor.
b.) The first set of foundational skills has
to do with discovery and dialogue.
6. Challenging Skills
a.) Why, when and how to use challenging skills.
7. Goal Setting and Solution Skills
a.) How and when to use these skills to achieve
optimal results
8. Resistance, Boundaries and Ethics
